I am one of those people who stand on the South Deerfield overpass over I-91 holding protest signs. I stand out because I love my country and I love democracy. Democracy is hard work. It means standing up for democratic principles and speaking out when we see things happening that are against our Constitution. I’ve never seen signs on the overpass that denigrate our military or support terrorism. I have seen signs that promote peace, the rule of law, protest the use of our military to police our citizens, and support of immigrants. These are all democratic principles. All it takes for a democracy to turn into an oligarchy or authoritarian state is for good people to do nothing.
