Learn about LifePath’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program
NORTHFIELD — Trevor Boeding will give a talk at the Northfield Senior Center on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to noon about the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program at LifePath.
Individuals living in nursing homes and rest homes often face difficulties in securing high-quality care and maintaining quality of life. Boeding will discuss issues commonly experienced by individuals living in nursing homes and rest homes, and how representatives with the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program can advocate on their behalf to resolve issues large and small. The program also supports family members, friends and substituted decision makers to stand up for the rights of residents.
Residents’ rights and trends in long-term care will also be discussed. The discussion will also cover how to choose a nursing home or rest home. There will be time for questions and Boeding will be available after the session for consultation.

Ornithologist to lead ‘Naturalists and Novelists’ program
NORTHFIELD — As part of a series of upcoming talks presented by the Northfield Bird Club, ornithologist David Spector will present “Naturalists and Novelists: Birds, Bewick and the Brontës” at Dickinson Memorial Library on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m.
Spector will describe some of the birds in the novels “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Brontë and “Wuthering Heights” by her sister Emily Brontë, as well as introduce the wood engravings of bird illustrator Thomas Bewick and discuss his influence on the Brontës. He will make the case that attention to the birds can give new insight into the reading of classics and even reveal a two-century-old conversation between sisters.
Spector has done research on warbler song and has an interest in birds in literature. He is a retired professor of biology at Central Connecticut State University, former board president of the Hitchcock Center for the Environment and co-editor of the “Bird Finding Guide to Western Massachusetts.”
The Northfield Bird Club has scheduled programs through April. The events lineup can be viewed at northfieldbirdclub.org/programs.
