The Mahar girls volleyball team beat Athol, 3-0, in a Western division affair in Orange on Thursday.

The Senators swept away the Bears, winning each set by 10 points or more.

Top players were Hayden Comeau (four digs, seven kills, eight aces), Madelynn Burgess (two digs, two kills, four aces, five assists)  and Mckenzie Scribner (two kills, ace, six assists).

Set scores came out to 25-15, 25-14 and 25-8 for Mahar.

Giana Vaillancourt was the highlight for Athol, concluding with three kills, two assists and five digs.

Frontier 3, East Longmeadow 1 — The Redhawks’ trio of Morgan Mason, Caitlin Maio and Cadence Martin stepped up in their fourth win of the season.

Mason mustered 10 kills, Maio smacked 18 kills and Martin mashed nine aces and 32 assists.

“Huge 3-1 win tonight,” Frontier head coach Courtney Parent said. “Proud of my team for rallying after a starter went down with an injury last night.”

Set scores were 25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 25-12.

Franklin Tech 3, Greenfield 1 — The Eagles have now won six of seven following Thursday’s four-set victory.

Emma Petersen (three aces, seven kills, three digs, two blocks) Lilyann Baldwin (six digs, 22 assists) and Jenna Petrowicz (four aces, six kills, seven digs) guided Tech to the win.

The Green Wave are trending the opposite direction, having now lost three of four.

Turners 3, Mohawk 1 — The Thunder roared to its third consecutive win in the win against the Warriors.

Turners took the match by set scores of 25-17, 16-25, 25-18 and 25-14.

Emmalee Inman (10 kills; five aces) and Emma Canaday (five kills,14 assists, two aces) led Mohawk.

PVCA 3, Pioneer 1 — The Panthers were downed for the fourth straight match in the home loss.

Jacobia Tyminski (four kills, two blocks, 18 digs, three aces) had a good game for Pioneer.

Girls soccer

Holyoke 4, Greenfield 4 — Thursday’s shootout resulted in a draw as eight total goals were scored.

Kyra Lippman registered two for the Purple Knights and had a helper, while Tayler Bergeron and Elderina Cecunjanin each found the back of the net twice. Cecunjanin also had two assists.

Scarlett Mendes also stuffed in two points (goal, assist) for Holyoke.

Knights goalie Kyleigh Luther (eight saves) and Green Wave keeper Lexi Berry (11 saves) were busy between the pipes.

Granby 3, Frontier 1 — The Rams’ point streak continues as Marcela Tapia’s two goals were key in their fourth consecutive game without a loss.

Meredith Bartosz saw plenty of action as the Granby goalie made 11 saves.

Abby Cenderowski netted the Redhawks’ goal, who hadn’t lost their previous five games. Goalie Jazzy Hayes had six saves.

Smith Academy 2, Franklin Tech 2 — Anna Scagel reached 100 career points in the Falcons tie with the Eagles.

Scagel slotted both of Smith’s goals to reach the milestone.

Kaelyn Mclean and Faythe Sobieski tallied strikes for Tech.

Saves favored the Falcons 14-8. Vivian Higeura (Smith) and Shayly Martin (Tech) were the keepers listed.

Mahar 0, Athol 0 — Goalies Mackenzie Matthews (Senators) and Addy Proctor (Bears) had sparkling performances in the deadlock.

Matthews finished with nine saves while Proctor posted 14 stops.

Golf

Quabbin 167, Athol 181 — Ethan Hever (39), Dominik St. Andre (41), Rafea Lopez (49) and Brody Brockney (52) were the Bears’ top four golfers in their defeat at Ellinwood Country Club.

West Springfield 149, Frontier 152 — The Redhawks did everything they could, but still fell to a very talented Bulldogs squad at Cherry Hill Golf Course.

Jacob Cornelison grabbed co-medalist honors with a four-under 31 for Frontier. Brady Wood (39) and Teddy McCarthy (40, career low) also turned in stellar rounds for the Redhawks.

Westfield’s top two scorers shot 31 and 33.

Franklin Tech 154, Pioneer 184 — Grady Deery led all golfers with a 35 as the Eagles bested the Panthers at Northfield Golf Course.

Jack Day (36), Braeden Talbot (37) and Mason Vassar (45) followed Deery for Franklin.

Pioneer’s top four came in as Carter Gerry (41), Michael Cyhowski and Tucker Aldrich (47) and Chayton Massa (49).

Wednesday Results

Boys soccer

Frontier 2, Chicopee 1 — Gus Radner posted two, unassisted free-kick goals to power the Redhawks to the come-from-behind victory.

Jack Cusson was fabulous for Frontier in net, totaling 12 saves. Frontier trailed, 1-0, at halftime.

Girls soccer

Franklin Tech 5, Narragansett 2 — Four goals from Faythe Sobieski lifted the Eagles to the win.

“Nice game for Faythe,” Tech head coach Jason Butynski said. “Really proud of how far she is coming as an offensive leader. She looked confident with the ball on her foot all game and finished well.”

Field hockey

Frontier 3, Quabbin 1 — The Redhawks scored all three goals in the third quarter to take the victory.

Haly Doucette-Kaplan had a huge game, assisting on all three Frontier tallies.

Franklin Tech 2, Turners 0 — Teagan Donahue and Amelia Rider found the back of the net for the Eagles in the rivalry win

Volleyball

Westfield 3, Frontier 0 — The Redhawks were blanked by the Bombers.

Avah Spearance and Caitlin Mao each posted seven kills for Frontier.

Turners 3, Pioneer 0 — Maddie Haight and Maddie Dietz filled up the stat sheet in the Thunder’s shutout.

Haight had two aces, three kills, eight digs and three assists, while Dietz deposited six aces, five kills, five digs and 12 assists.

Set scores favored Turners 25-19, 25-21 and 25-20.

Kiara Gruskowski (two kills, two blocks, 21 digs, two aces, four assists) turned in a strong performance for the Panthers.

Mohawk 3, Athol 1 — Claire Johnston (eight aces), Anna Whitaker (seven aces) and Emmalee Inman (four aces, four kills) all played key roles in the Warriors win.

Aby Spooner (seven kills) played well for the Bears.

Golf

Smith Voc 162, Hopkins 162, Mohawk 207 — The Vikings won the tiebreaker, 48-49, to earn the victory against the Golden Hawks in the tri-meet.

Hopkins’ Ryley Regan received medalist honors with a 34, while Smith Voc was led by Keller McMahon’s 39.

The Warriors’ best scorer was Connor Bergeron (47).

Chicopee Comp 169, Frontier 172 — Jacob Cornelison (39) and Braiden Dion (43) counted as the Redhawks’ top scorers in the defeat at Chicopee Country Club.

Palmer 15, Turners 45 (boys): 
Green Wave runner Ryan Spofford set the new course record in their tri-meet win at the Bob Avery Course in Turners.

Spofford, who won the 2.8-mile race, grabbed a time of 16 minutes, 36 seconds. 

Lucian Carlo earned a personal-record as the Thunder’s top finisher crossed the finish line in 20:03.

Helie, Wolbach highlight girls race

Greenfield’s Lauren Helie took first in the girls race in 22:40, while Olivia Wolbach snagged second in 24 minutes flat for Turners.

Eight total runners comprised the girls race, so there were no team scores.

Rex Kuopala secured second in the 3.2-mile race in 20:26 as the Warriors’ fastest finisher.

All seven Mohawk runners placed 21st or better.

The Warriors’ fourth and fifth runners, Brooke Harrison and Ella Thompson, were the difference in the tri-meet win as the duo finished ahead of the Gators’ fourth runner.

Anya Read won the race for Mohawk in 22:06.

Gateway’s Ava Christie earned fourth place in 23:50 as its top runner.
