East Northfield Water Co.
The Sept. 23 Recorder article captures the challenges for East Northfield Water Company as it continues to assure the delivery of safe, clean and affordable water to its customers. [“Filtration system needs stall Northfield water company transition”].
However, the article was not clear concerning the only time our water quality has been questioned.
Our “raw” untreated reservoir water is tested twice a week. Test samples are sent to an independent testing laboratory approved by MA DEP. In late Summer and early Fall 2018, analysis by that laboratory showed an increase in coliform bacteria beyond acceptable levels. These tests completed seven years ago were the only tests of our raw water to ever question its quality.
In addition, our “raw” water when it is tested has not yet been treated by our systems. No treated water has ever failed any tests. Only treated water is delivered to our customers.
We thank state Sen. Jo Comerford, her staff and the Northfield town leadership for their continued support in the effort to transfer our assets and operations to Grandin Water District which will be eligible to obtain grants and loans for the installation of affordable filtration. While that effort is ongoing, we will continue to operate our water system to assure the deliver of safe, clean and affordable water to our community. We note we recently replaced a water main on Pierson Road, and have made substantial improvements and repairs to other mains and pipes.
