GREENFIELD — Another Frontier-Greenfield field hockey game was tied into the second half on Friday. But the visiting Redhawks found a way to break through, and ultimately captured a 2-0 Suburban League victory at Donna Woodcock Field.
It was Frontier’s sixth win in a row over Greenfield, dating back to the 2023 season. The Hawks won all three meetings in 2024 and the final two games of 2023.
“Greenfield-Frontier games are always very intense and it always comes down to the end,” Frontier coach Missy Mahar said. “I thought the girls picked it up in the third and fourth quarters, picked up the tempo, and we were able to capitalize on a couple opportunities.”
Scoreless into the third quarter, Frontier broke through on a Haly Doucette-Kaplan goal to make it 1-0. Macy DeMaio was credited with the assist.
The two players connected for an insurance goal in the fourth quarter, as Doucette-Kaplan’s initial shot was saved by Green Wave goalie Kayden Viencek, but DeMaio collected the rebound and buried a shot to make it 2-0 with 7:01 remaining.
“We got a little more hungry in the (penalty) circle so I was happy to see that from the girls,” Mahar said.
Greenfield coach Erin Thayer saw her team’s week come to an end with two wins in three games. The Wave beat Westfield (2-0) and Amherst (6-0) before Friday’s loss to Frontier dropped them to 3-4 overall.
“We’ve played a lot of games in a short amount of time to start the season so the schedule spreads out a bit more now,” said Thayer. “We have to learn from our mistakes. With the talent we have, we can be in every game but we just haven’t been able to figure out how to put it all together yet.”
The two teams meet one more time in the regular season on Oct. 14 in South Deerfield — a 7 p.m. game on the school’s football field.
Palmer 2, Turners 2 — Camden Kimball and Ellie Gelinas scored for the Thunder, which played to a 2-2 County League tie on Friday night in Turners Falls.
Each player assisted on the other’s goal, and keeper Scarlett LaRose made five saves in net for Turners.
Boys soccer
Central 1, Frontier 0 — Jack Cusson made five saves in net for the Redhawks, which allowed a 68th-minute goal to Jayden Rodriguez in a 1-0 loss to the Golden Eagles on Friday.
Central goalie Carl Belony made 10 saves for the shutout.
Volleyball
Franklin Tech 3, Athol 1 — The Eagles held serve at home, building an early 2-0 lead and capturing a four-set win on Friday in Turners Falls.
Set scores were 25-13, 25-12, 14-25, 25-23.
Abby Spooner and Giana Vaillancourt each racked up seven aces for the Bears, and Vaillancourt dished out seven assists on the night. Ella Reed and Maddie Desrosiers paced the offense with three kills apiece.
Greenfield 3, Pioneer 2 — It was a wild five-setter at Nichols Gymnasium in Greenfield, as the Green Wave held on in crunch time to stay undefeated on the season.
Set scores were 25-17, 24-26, 25-10, 20-25, 16-14. Greenfield improved to 7-0 on the season, winning their fourth five-set match of the season in the process.
Pioneer’s Jacobia Tyminski had 10 kills while Sophia Wood went for 14 assists and six digs. Abbie Ray added three kills for the Panthers, and Greta Lewis tossed in nine aces.
“These girls left everything out on the floor tonight, I’m so proud to be their coach,” Pioneer coach Shannon Connolly said. “This was the closest anyone had come to beating Greenfield all season.”
Girls soccer
Franklin Tech 0, Mahar 0 — It was a stalemate in Orange, as Mahar goalie Mackenzie Matthews (five saves) and Tech goalie Shayly Martin (12 saves) both pitched shutouts in a Bi-County League clash at the Woodward Complex.
“I thought both teams did a really good job of keeping the play in front of them and limited dangerous balls into the box,” Mahar coach Chad Softic said. “Both goalkeepers were outstanding. Mackenzie has really stepped up for us and has shown her selflessness. [Tech] Coach [Jason] Butynski is doing a great job with that program.”
Hopkins 4, Greenfield 2 — Tayler Bergeron scored twice for the Green Wave, which couldn’t keep pace with unbeaten Hopkins on Friday in Greenfield.
Elderina Cecunjanin and H’Azayzel Rivera assisted on goals for Greenfield, and goalkeeper Lexi Berry made 14 saves.
