It was a goalkeeping duel in Orange on Wednesday, as Athol’s Ava Adams and Mahar’s Mackenzie Matthews each pitched a shutout as the teams played to a 0-0 Bi-County League draw at the Woodward Complex.

Mahar outshot Athol by a 26-9 margin, but Adams made 17 saves to keep the visiting Bears in range. Matthews stopped all five shots she faced for the Senators.

“It was a really good soccer game and I thought both keepers were rock solid,” Mahar head coach Chad Softic said. “I was certainly pleased with how responsible we played and we did a much better job of keeping the game in front of us, which has been an issue.”

Athol (1-1-1) next hosts Franklin Tech on Friday night while Mahar (0-2-1), which is still seeking its first goal of the season, travels to Westfield to play St. Mary’s on Friday.

“One of these days the soccer gods will reward us with a goal,” said Softic.
