‘Fabulous’40s Films with Jonathan Boschen’ to debut Sept. 1

GREENFIELD — The Garden Cinemas at 361 Main St. will host “Fabulous ’40s Films with Jonathan Boschen,” starting with a screening of “Casablanca” (1942) on Monday, Sept. 1.

Boschen, a local film and theater historian, will discuss the history of the movie, which is one of his favorites, as well as the careers of stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, technical details of the film and information on its first Greenfield showing. Boschen’s introduction will start at 6:30 p.m. and a screening of the movie will immediately follow.

Admission is $10.50 for adults, and $8.50 for children, seniors and students.

“Casablanca” is the first movie in this new classic film series. Three other movies are booked for screenings: “Arsenic and Old Lace” (1944) on Oct. 6, “Mildred Pierce” (1945) on Nov. 3, and “The Man Who Came to Dinner” (1941) on Dec. 1. Four more movies will be planned for winter and spring.

“Casablanca” is a romantic drama set during World War II about American expatriate Rick Blaine, portrayed by Humphrey Bogart, who must choose between his love for his former flame Ilsa Lund, portrayed by Ingrid Bergman, and helping her resistance leader husband escape from the city of Casablanca in Vichy-controlled Morocco. The movie was first shown in Greenfield on Feb. 7, 1943, at the Lawler Theatre.

This is not Boschen’s first film series at the Garden Cinemas. He previously led “Talking Talkies,” which focused on sharing movies from the 1930s, last fall and winter.
