I am writing this in response to columnist John Bos’ latest onslaught against conservative Republicans [“Are there any responsible western Massachusetts conservatives?” Recorder, March 2].

For the writer to suggest that Republicans want to get rid of our democratic form of government is total lunacy. As far as I can tell, Joe Biden is still in the White House, the Democrats still rule the Senate and the Republicans control the House. Donald Trump did not refuse to let Mr. Biden into the White House. The notion that he wants to be president for life and will not give up after his next four-year term has already been disproved by his past actions.

I am a 75-year-old Vietnam veteran with Christian beliefs and conservative values. I am still working, although it is only part time because I cannot afford to retire. I do take advantage of certain government-funded programs. Yes, I use the VA for my health care and I do receive Social Security benefits.

So, why would I vote for Trump over Biden? Have you looked around at what has happened to our country under this present administration? Where to begin? On day one, Biden signed multiple executive orders to negate Trump’s executive orders regarding the Keystone XL pipeline and the border.

At that time we were on the verge of being energy independent and the border was basically a non-issue. In one afternoon, Biden ceased the pipeline development, meaning we would now depend on dirty oil from countries that hate us such as lran and Venezuela, and helping those countries’ economies while hurting ours. Then Mr. Biden negated through executive orders all of the polices Trump had enacted concerning our southern border including “remain in Mexico” to keep migrants there until they had filled out all of their paperwork concerning asylum.

He stopped the building of the wall and basically threw up a welcome sign for any and all that our border was now wide open, giving permission for any hostile government that they could send to the U.S. any person they did not want to stay in their country. I believe with so many undocumented immigrants in our country that it is only a matter of time until we have an incident that will be far worse than 9/11.

The Russian hoax … you believe that Trump is in bed with Putin. Then why did Putin endorse Biden? The Republicans are not gutting aid to Ukraine, they just want our own border fixed first. Put America First. If Biden were a stronger figure on the international scene I don’t believe Putin would have dared invade Ukraine in the first place. He definitely wouldn’t have done it with Trump in office. It was under Obama that he first invaded Crimea, and now under Biden he invaded Ukraine.

Next issue. Women’s rights. The abortion ruling did not make abortion illegal. It merely removed it from federal control to the states where it belongs. Has anything really changed here in Massachusetts concerning abortion other than the radical left running around with their hair on fire condemning pro-life Christians for our beliefs?

Next, the economy. When Trump left office gas was at a national average of $2.38. Within months we were seeing gas prices well above $4 and more. Inflation at the time was around 2%. It has risen to 8% in 2022 and while it has gone down some it still remains high. If that doesn’t mean anything to you, go to McDonald’s or Wendy’s and try to feed four people for less than $40.

I have many more things I am upset about with the current administration — homeless veterans not being taken care of and putting undocumented immigrants ahead of them. Free health care using our VA facilities for these migrants. Providing food and clothing and shelter while our own citizens are suffering. Education failures.

Anyway, I could go on and on, but let me close by saying not everyone here in America is happy with Joe Biden and how he has run our country. I also do not like being denigrated by people like Mr. Bos who believe that just because someone doesn’t agree with their politics it makes us somewhat less human. I do not consider myself to be deplorable. I do have values and beliefs and I also have many faults, but as a citizen of this great country, I am going to vote those values, and columnists like Bos will have to put up with it. There may be more out there who agree with me. I guess we will see.
