Greenfield voters, business owners, and Franklin County residents, I want to take a few moments to share why I’m supporting Roxann Wedegartner for mayor. I include all of you because many decisions and programs impact your lives.

Imagine taking office and COVID becomes the priority. We witnessed a well-run vaccine clinic facilitated by public safety and supporting departments. We watched businesses pivot and struggle under the new normal. New ideas were introduced like outdoor seating, takeout alcoholic beverages, masking, social distancing, and Zoom meetings.

The hardest hit were our schools. We lost some families who wanted to join districts that were operating in person. The city as a whole had to continue to function. Her campaign ideas still needed to be implemented. Roxann was not only up for the job, but was investing her time in all departments to keep them moving forward.

When I talk with our mayor about the homeless population and resources available, I can count on the conversation to include our veterans. Do I think there have been mistakes? Yes, but council decisions of which I am part of should be recognized as well.

We have a checks and balances form of government. It was what people voted for. As you have witnessed before, the majority vote doesn’t always become so and make everyone happy. I respect Roxann for her work and patience with the French King property years ago, a long battle that confirmed that the process was in fact followed. I am happy to see the possibilities of industry coming to that land thanks to her planning. The fire station, skate park, and the Wilson’s redevelopment and housing project don’t just give me hope, they make me feel proud of our community, county, and mayor.

Join me on Nov. 7 and vote to re-elect Roxann. We should allow her to finish.

Penny Ricketts, at-large city councilor
