Team from around western Mass. traveled to Veterans Memorial Golf Course in Springfield on Monday to compete in the annual PVIAC Invitational Two-Ball.
Northampton was the winning team in the 26-school field, with brothers Galen and Reilly Fowles shooting a 10-under 62 on the par 72 course. Pope Francis took second (68) while Minnechaug took third (70).
Turners Falls — which is an unbeaten 7-0 in match play this season — had an impressive day on Monday against the best teams in western Mass., as the pairing of Joey Mosca and Jackson Day fired an even-par 72 to finish in a tie for fourth with East Longmeadow and Ludlow.
“They shot even and had a good day,” Thunder coach Dave Kennedy said. “They said they left a couple out there but this was a great outcome. Neither Joey or Jack had played or seen the course before but they played well out there.”
It was a steady day that produced the strong finish for Turners. Mosca and Day finished with 14 pars, two bogeys and two birdies. In a format different than what they’re accustomed to during the season, Kennedy said his players acquitted themselves well.
“It’s very different than what they’re used to,” Kennedy said. “They enjoyed the full day of golf. Everything went well. The play moved along and you could score on the course.”
Frontier’s pairing of Cam Skiffington and Ryan Cetto tied for 10th place after finishing with a 3-over 75. Franklin Tech’s Brady Booska and Gabe Mota shot a 76 to tie for 12th, Greenfield’s pairing of Johnny Marchefka and Preston Lafleur tied for 14th with a 77, Pioneer’s Ben Werner and Brayden Thayer took 19th with an 81 while Mohawk Trail’s Logan Moore and Phineas Tuttman tied for 21st with an 83.
