The Frontier and Turners Falls volleyball teams have come close to meeting in the late stages of the MIAA Division 5 state tournament the last few years. 

When the two local volleyball powers came together on Monday at Goodnow Gymnasium, it was the Redhawks that were able to come out victorious. The Thunder kept it close throughout but Frontier came out on top each set, walking away with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 independent sweep over the visiting Thunder. 

Caroline Deane had a big game for the Redhawks, putting down 17 kills and four aces. Olivia Machon smashed three kills and eight aces, Kate DeMaio finished with a trio of kills and aces while Allie Pierce and Parrish Stilla each had 11 assists in the victory. 

Taylor Greene dished 14 assists and added four kills, Madi Liimatainen finished with 12 kills and an ace, Kiera Richardson Meatty put down two kills while Madisyn Dietz cracked an ace and came up with nine digs defensively for the Thunder. 

Franklin Tech 3, Athol 1 — The Eagles made it four wins in a row on Monday, walking away with a 25-17, 25-10, 21-25, 26-24 victory over the Bears at Mallet Gymnasium in a Northern League match.

Lea Chapman finished with four aces, nine kills, two digs and one block, Shelby O’Leary put down eight aces, two kills to go along with three digs and 12 assists while Jenna Petrowicz (seven aces, four kills, two blocks), Emma Petersen (nine aces, two kills, eight digs, one block) and Brooke Smith (three kills, three assists, one block) came up big for Franklin Tech in the victory. 

Laney Florentino led the way with six kills, 11 assists and one ace while Alma White finished with three kills, six assists and two aces while Giana Vaillancourt had six aces and four assists for Athol. 

Mahar 3, Greenfield 0 — It’s been a solid start to the season for the Senators, which got back to the .500 mark on Monday thanks to a 25-22, 25-17, 25-17 sweep of the Green Wave in a Northern League contest in Orange.

Mahar improved to 4-4 on the season, 2-4 in the league.

Madelynn Burgess racked up eight aces to go with six assists and three kills for the Senators, while Mia Santana went for six aces and three assists. Kamryn Hart (three aces), Kenzie Scribner (three aces, six digs) and Hayden Comeau (seven aces, five kills, four digs) also aided the big win for Mahar.

Mackensie Goncalves (seven kills), Stella Verlander (eight aces), Julia Velville (four kills), Odyssea Camero Rivera (eight assists) and Paloma Cruz Lopez (nine digs) played well for Greenfield. 

Mohawk Trail 3, Pioneer 0 — Palmer King recorded 20 aces, 11 assists and two kills to help lift the Warriors to a 25-7, 25-6, 25-15 win over the Panthers in a Northern League contest in Northfield on Monday. 

Grace Davenport finished with six aces and a kill, Emma Canaday dished two assists and added two kills while Maddie Cosentino put down four kills in the victory. 

Oceana Duclos finished with a kill and six digs, Kayla Gauthier had two kills and two aces, Emma Strong put down one kill and one ace while Erin Killay played well defensively for Pioneer.

Boys soccer

Franklin Tech 5, St Mary’s 2 — The Eagles stormed out of the gates to a 3-0 advantage, but host St. Mary’s cut the deficit to 3-2 early in the second half. Jaxon Kotright-Clark netted an important insurance marker to answer however, and Jack Gancarz potted his second of the outing in the 73rd minute to help Tech to a 5-2 win on Monday in Westfield.

Mason Thurston got Franklin Tech (2-4-1) off on the right foot with a goal in the game’s opening minute off an assist from Preston Duvall. Gancarz scored his first of the contest not long after, with an assist from Lucas Gadway. A St. Mary’s own goal made it a 3-0 game, before Mason Campbell got the Saints on the board with a penalty kick tally just before halftime.

Campbell scored again three minutes into the second half, and that 3-2 score held until Kotright-Clark buried a goal in the 64th minute to ease the tension.

“With the wet day, you’re just waiting for a missed trap or one to squirt through so you’re trying to avoid disaster there,” Franklin Tech coach Kurt Richardson said.

Caleb Johnston and Robert Belval added assists for the Eagles.

Turners 4, Pioneer 2 — Tied 1-1 at the half, the Thunder scored the opening two goals of the second half to pave the way to an independent win over the visiting Panthers on Monday. 

Yolvin Ovalle and Aras Wiles each finished with a pair of goals for Turners, with Noah Kolodziej providing an assist. Ty Ellis and Gavin Gammell were the Pioneer goal scorers. 

Field hockey

Franklin Tech 5, Smith Academy 0 — Hannah Gilbert tossed in a hat trick to help lead the Eagles to an independent win over the Falcons in Turners on Monday. 

Kait Trudeau finished with a pair of goals and also had an assist on one of Gilbert’s tallies while Madison Markwell made two saves in the win.

Boys soccer

Frontier 4, Douglas 0 — Rosco Palmer tallied for the Redhawks in the first half before they put three in the back in the net during the final 40 minutes of action, earning an independent win over Douglas in South Deerfield on Saturday. 

Aidan Valderrama, Palmer and Chanmin Son tallied in the second half for Frontier, with Son recording an assist. Owen Babb made five saves in the win.

Girls soccer

Douglas 8, Frontier 2 — Carly Robertson and Ashley Rivard tallied for the Redhawks in the second half in a loss to Douglas in South Deerfield on Saturday. 

Field hockey

Frontier 1, Minnechaug 1 — Hailey Hutkoski scored off an assist from Ashley Taylor in the third quarter but the Falcons tied the game in the fourth, with Frontier earning a Suburban League tie in South Deerfield on Saturday. 

Kyra Richards made five saves for Frontier. 

 DA results

The Deerfield Academy boys water polo team secured a pair of wins over the weekend, beating Westminster (13-5) and Loomis (15-8). 

On the football field DA walked away with a 27-6 win against Suffield while in boys soccer, the Big Green defeated Brunswick (4-1). 

The DA field hockey team fell to  Hotchkiss (1-0), in girls volleyball the Big Green beat Sacred Heart (2-0) but lost to BB&N (2-1) while in girls soccer, the Big Green lost to Kimball Union, 1-0.
