GREENFIELD — The annual summer meals program, Summer Eats, will kick off on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Green River Swimming and Recreation Area.
Greenfield public schools’ Food Service Department will serve a free meal from its new food truck. There will be lawn games, crafts and activities, and resources from a variety of community organizations. In the event of rain, the kick-off activities will move to Greenfield Middle School.
Participating organizations include Community Action Pioneer Valley, Stone Soup Cafe, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County, Franklin Community Co-Op, Greenfield Housing Authority, Greenfield Community College Admissions, Greenfield Safe Schools Safe Streets Coalition, Communities That Care Coalition and more.
This year, the meals program will run from June 26 to Aug. 28.

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Public Library on Main Street is organizing a book chain to pass picture books from the current library to the new building next door on Saturday, June 24, at 10 a.m.
Refreshments will be served and participating children will be given a free book to take home.

GREENFIELD — Following 20 years of municipal management experience, Finance Director Diana Schindler recently earned her certification as a Massachusetts certified public purchasing official (MCPPO) from the Office of the Inspector General. Schindler is one of three Greenfield municipal employees to receive this distinction.
The MCCPO certification process encompasses a wide range of topics, including supply procurement and designing and constructing public facilities. Each lesson on these subjects provides resources and a details about Massachusetts practices. The insights Schindler gained will contribute to the Finance Department’s proficiency, transparency and accountability in managing public funds.
Schindler considers receiving her MCPPO a “significant milestone” in her career.
“As a certified MCPPO, I am excited to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during this certification process to work alongside Laura Phelps, Greenfield’s chief procurement off icer, to improve our procure ment practices, streamline operations and ultimately contribute to the financial well-being of the city of Greenfield,” Schindler said in a statement. “Together, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency and fairness in all procurement activities, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are utilized efficiently and effectively.”
