Police chief commends Montague man for help at fire

NORTHFIELD — Police Chief Jon Hall read a letter during a recent Selectboard meeting commending Montague resident Tristan McKenna, a former military hospital corpsman, for his role in assisting residents during a Feb. 17 fire on Pine Street.

McKenna is credited as the first person to enter the three-story apartment building in an effort to assist anyone who may have been trapped inside. Hall said in his letter that McKenna helped an elderly couple on the first floor who wasn’t aware of the fire and helped carry a resident out who was unable to walk.

“Your quick actions led to the preservation of life and/or property,” Hall’s letter reads. “You ensured everyone was safe and even carried a resident to safety. Your actions were heroic and we are proud of your selfless help to our community.”

The Selectboard and residents who attended the meeting clapped for McKenna, who then shook hands with board members Mary Bowen and Alex Meisner.
