Two Greenfield High School alums squared off in a big early-season women’s basketball matchup at Staake Gymnasium in Wellesley on Tuesday night.
Sam Smith has helped Babson women’s basketball team get out to a 6-0 start to the season while her former teammate at Greenfield, Katie Haselton, has propelled Framingham State to a 5-1 record in the early portion of the season.
The Beavers and the Rams met up on Tuesday, with Babson turning things on in the second quarter to take a 36-29 lead into the half. The Beavers led 57-47 going into the fourth quarter.
Haselton knocked down a shot with 1:45 to play to cut the Babson lead to 69-63, capping off a 12-2 Framingham State run. That was as close as the Beavers let it get, as Babson knocked down its free throws down the stretch to advance to 7-0 on the year with a 71-63 victory.
It was the 700th career victory for Babson coach Judy Blinstrub.
Smith had a big game for the Beavers, finishing with a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Haselton had a game-high 17 points for the Rams, knocking down seven shots from the field, three coming from behind the arc.
Next up for Smith and Babson is a trip to Miami, Florida to play in the Cruzin’ Classic on Dec. 20-21. Haselton and Framingham return home to host Curry College on Thursday.
