SUNDERLAND — Two people were medically evaluated after a vehicle collision at the intersection of Routes 47 and 116 on Sunday afternoon.

Fire Chief Steven Benjamin said the accident, which was “just a fender-bender,” caused injuries that were “certainly not life-threatening.” Two of the vehicles’ six total occupants were evaluated by South County EMS. Hospitalization was unlikely to be necessary, Benjamin said.

The accident, which was reported at 12:32 p.m., occurred when the driver of a tan Toyota Corolla failed to stop and rear-ended a green Audi Q5. While the Audi suffered minor rear-end damage, the Corolla sustained severe front-end damage. Benjamin said the cause of the crash is under investigation by the Sunderland Police Department.

“It’s hard to tell,” he said of weather potentially being a factor. “The roadway was wet, but police are trying to piece together all of the details.”

Traffic was backed up considerably near the intersection as emergency responders tended to the situation.

One South County EMS ambulance was used at the scene, although a second South County EMS ambulance and an Amherst Fire Department ambulance also responded. Police from Deerfield and Whately assisted with traffic control. Ernie’s Towing towed the Toyota.
