GREENFIELD — Two area residents were sentenced to three to five years in state prison by Franklin County Superior Court Judge John Agostini on Thursday in connection with what prosecutors said was a near daily scheme in which they stole more than $100,000 from a man suffering from dementia.

Jason Hamon, 47, of Turners Falls, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and three counts of larceny from an elder over $250. Rebecca Campagna, 39, of Greenfield, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and two counts of larceny from an elder over $250.

Hamon and Campagna cashed checks using many different fake names, depleting the 78-year-old victim’s life savings between 2018 and 2020. According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the pair did so with full knowledge the victim had dementia and lacked the capacity to consent.

“The defendants richly deserved state prison sentences for their repeated exploitation of a vulnerable elder,” Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Joseph Webber said in a statement.

Webber recommended Agostini adopt a three-to-five-year prison sentence, citing the severity of the crimes, the harm done to the victim and his family, the importance of punishment and deterrence, and the criminal records of both Hamon and Campagna. The sentencing recommendation was agreed upon by Greenfield attorney Robert Bray, representing Hamon, and Greenfield attorney Daniel Solomon, representing Campagna, according to the DA’s office.

Bray and Solomon could not be reached for comment by press time on Thursday.
