It was a fast start for the Athol volleyball team on Tuesday in its season opener against Pioneer.
The Bears raced out to a 25-9 win in the opening set and earned a tough fought 25-22 victory in the second set before coming away with a 25-6 win in the third frame to come away with a 3-0 triumph over the visiting Panthers in a Northern League contest at Mallet Gymnasium in Athol.
Olivia Mayer led Athol with five kills. Alma White recorded nine aces, two kills and two assists, Abby Lutz put down six aces, Laney Florentino tossed three assists and added four kills while Alyssa Logan came up with 13 digs in the win.
Wahconah 3, Mohawk Trail 0 — Palmer King smacked six kills, put down seven aces and dished two assists but the Warriors fell 25-13, 25-5, 26-24 on the road to host Wahconah in a Northern League match.
Maddie Lamorie had six assists while Riley Giard and Grace Davenport each had a pair of aces and kills for Mohawk Trail.
Turners 3, Mahar 0 — The defending Northern League champions picked up right where they left off a season ago, cruising to a 25-7, 25-9, 25-15 sweep of the Senators in Orange on Tuesday.
Taylor Greene put down 14 aces and dished seven assists for the Thunder (1-0) and Madi Liimatainen tallied four kills and two aces while Madisyn Dietz had five aces in the victory.
Saylor Kegans had three aces in the loss for the Sens.
