It was a thrilling season-opener for the Greenfield field hockey team on Monday against Minnechaug.

Kaelin Cerasuolo got the Falcons on the board early, scoring just three minutes into the contest. From there Minnechaug locked in defensively, holding the Green Wave to just two shot attempts in the contest.

One of those shots came in the final 30 seconds, and it made all the difference. Greenfield got a corner and sent it into the circle where it took a couple bounces. The ball eventually found its way onto the stick of freshman Mckenzie Boswell, who smashed it home to tie the game with 16 seconds remaining.

The score held to the final whistle, with the Green Wave and Minnechaug playing to a 1-1 tie in a Suburban League contest.

“It was a fight,” Greenfield coach Erin Thayer said. “We never gave up the entire game.”

Ainslee Flynn stood tall in goal for the Green Wave, stopping 14 shots. Greenfield had a 5-1 corner advantage in the game.

Frontier 0, Agawam 0 — The Redhawks also opened their season on Monday, playing to a scoreless tie with the host Brownies in a Suburban League contest.

Ella Flanders had the shutout in the cage, coming up with 13 saves for Frontier. The Redhawks put seven shots on goal.
