It was a winning opening weekend for the Franklin County Bulldogs Youth Football program.
The Pee Wee team rode a punishing ground game from Collin Winslow, who racked up 87 yards and two touchdowns in a 25-7 win over Ware at Vets Field in Greenfield on Sunday.
Jackson Puchalski ran for 70 yards and Kaydin Snow-Rose added 15 yards on the ground for the Bulldogs, while Ben Woodard quarterbacked the team to the victory and added a rushing touchdown.
The defense was led by Wesley Darling and Toby Campbell, who had multiple tackles for loss.
In Senior Division action, Franklin County opened with a big win over Ware behind a strong defensive effort led by Elliot Holcomb with three fumble recoveries, 11 tackles and four sacks. Sam Maiewski had five tackles and a pair of sacks.
Gavin Arsenault had an interception, and was 3-for-5 passing for 45 yards total for the Bulldogs. He also had a 20-yard passing touchdown to Jaxon Silva.
Owen Hill added 43 yards rushing with a touchdown and Davian Bala also had 47 yards on the ground with a score.
Franklin County plays Palmer next weekend.
Parker at Westfield State
Sunday’s women’s soccer game between Westfield State and Springfield College was suspended due to lightning, though Orange’s Delaney Parker had an assist to help the Owls to a 2-1 lead when things were halted.
Game resumption is TBD.
One day earlier, Parker also had an assist to help the Owls blank Mount Holyoke, 3-0, in the opening game of the Owls Kickoff Classic.
Westfield outshot the Lyons 30-3 in the match and had a 19-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Women’s XC
Rowe’s Grace Poplawski ran to a seventh-place overall finish to help the Westfield State women’s cross country team score a victory at the season-opening Keene State Alumni Invitational on Saturday in Keene, N.H.
Westfield finished with 32 points overall, easily outpointing Div. II Assumption (55) and Keene (57) for the team title among four complete scoring teams. The Owls gave new head coach Marlee Berg-Haryasz her first career head-coaching win in her debut.
WMass Fall League
A five-run fourth inning broke open a close game, as the Franklin County Fishercats rallied past Nxt Lvl Beast, 9-4, in a Western Mass. Fall Baseball League contest on Sunday.
Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, Braeden Tsipenyuk and Jackson Campbell drew consecutive walks to begin the frame and were plated on a single by Ethan Quinn. Quinn scored on an error, and singles by Ethan Mauthe (2 RBIs) and Ben Werner (RBI) pushed two more runs across.
Quinn finished the game with three hits, including two doubles and four RBIs, while Jackson Campbell had two hits.
Campbell earned the win pitching a scoreless fourth inning. Ethan Quinn (5Ks) and Hugh Cyhowski also pitched in the game.
In action on Saturday, Ben Werner tossed three innings with three strikeouts to lift the Fishercats past Wilbraham, 6-1.
Michael Pierce (single, double, RBI) led the offense for F.C., while Jackson Campbell and Ethan Quinn each had two hits apiece. Braeden Tsipenyuk, Hugh Cyhowski, Ian Simpson (RBI), and Alex McClelland (RBI) all had a hit and Evan Tsipenyuk added an RBI.
Labor Day Round Robin
Mike and Dylan Archer amassed the top point total in Flight One (26) to lead the pack at the Country Club of Greenfield’s Labor Day Round Robin on Sunday.
Pat Grogan and Dave Blanchette took second with 24 points.
In Flight Two, Norm and Jake Morris (26.5) took first place followed by Dan Gavin and Keegan Downie (26). In Flight Three, Matt Pitoniak and Scott Stacy (25) were first with Jim and Dan Bassett (24.5) in second. Flight Four winners we re Joe Wisneski and Ike Purington (26), followed by Keith Schempp and David McDonald (25).
The Women’s Flight was won by Sue Welenc and Corrine Sysun (26.5), followed by Elaine Goodhind and Sue O’Connor (24.5).
CCG Friday Night Mixer
Three teams tied for low gross honors at the Country Club of Greenfield’s Friday Night Mixer with rounds of 35: Al and Irene Woods, Mike and Liz Archer, and Mike Covey and Diane Carme.
Low net went to the teams of Norman Morris/Susan O’Connor and Roy and TC Emerson (33s).
