Eleven Franklin County YMCA Tumbling Tiger gymnasts traveled to Toledo, Ohio to compete at the 2022 YMCA National Gymnastics Championship recently, with two gymnasts bringing home national titles. 

Alex Wilga took home a national title on the floor in Xcel Gold Senior with a score of 9.7 while Arya Snir won vault in Xcel Silver Junior with a score of 9.125. 

Abby Lenois took third on vault in Level 6 Child and Elsie Baker finished in sixth on beam in Level 6 Senior. In Xcel Gold Senior, Wilga took sixth on vault and seventh in all-around, Shelby Senn placed eighth on beam and Anna Carlson-Belanger took fifth on beam and seventh on floor. 

Olive Klaus took second on bar and seventh in all around while Snir came in fifth on bar and all-around in Xcel Silver Junior. 

Angelina Aryapetyan, Brooke Cherwatti, Virginia Krezmien and Evemarie Page also competed in Toledo for the Tigers. 

Golf

114th Mass. Amateur

Ron Laverdiere and Nate Patterson competed in the 114th Massachusetts Amateur Golf Championship on Monday at the Concord Country Club, with Laverdiere finishing the day 6-over and Patterson finishing 9-over. 

Laverdiere — playing out of Crumpin-Fox Club — is tied for 61st place while Patterson, a Frontier graduate from Conway representing Northampton Country Club, finished the day in tied for 103rd place.

Arthur Zelmati of George Wright Golf Course had the top score of the day of 3-under, and just five players posted rounds under par during a difficult opening round.

Round 2 of the tournament begins on Tuesday before match play gets underway on Wednesday.

Softball

FC Summer League

Hannah Gilbert smashed three hits including a double and brought in five runs while also striking out 11 in the circle to help lead the Menace to a 17-4 victory over the Bombers on Monday in an F.C. Summer Softball contest at Murphy Park. 

Lindsey Taylor tallied a triple, a single and brought in a run, Skyler Steele had an RBI double, Anna Bucala recorded a triple and Cordelia Guerin drove in two runs in the win. 

Kristine Given had an RBI single while Karli Carmody and Audrianna Bassett each hit safely for the Bombers. 

Tennis

People’s Pint Doubles

The People’s Pint Doubles Tennis Tournament took place on the clay courts at Highland Park over the weekend, with Bill Thompson and Sehoon Ahn coming away as champions in the 15-team field. 

Thompson and Ahn defeated defending champs Steve Pedigree and Ken Hubbard in the semifinals 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 before beating Brian Lamore and Brian Campbell 6-3, 6-3 to take home the title. 

In the consolations, Chris Seaver and Gabe Seaver outlasted Rick Miner and Gary Gronokowski, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. 

Baseball

Senior Legion

Jason Quinn and Tyler Dubreuil had it going at the plate for Greenfield Post 81 on Monday against Aldenville. 

Quinn and Dubreuil each finished the game a home run away from the cycle to help lift Greenfield to a 15-3 win on the road. 

Hugh Cyhowski went the distance on the hill for Post 81, allowing just two hits. Ben Martino, Kyle Barnes and Mike Bassett each had a pair of hits while Jake Sak cracked a double in the victory. 

Tri-County League

Hector DeJesus singled home Owen Phelps in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Teddy Bear Pools walked off with an 8-7 victory over the Chicopee Tigers in a Tri-County League baseball game in South Deerfield.

The Poolmen (6-8) rallied with two outs and no one on in the bottom of the seventh of a 7-7 game. Phelps and Andrew Serio drew back-to-back walks with two outs, and DeJesus followed with a single to center field that allowed Phelps to scamper home with the winning run.

Cody Cleveland went 3 1/3 innings of relief (two earned runs) while Phelps got the final two outs in the top of the seventh and was credited with the win.

PVYBL Mantle

Despite a late comeback by West County, rallying back from  a 5-2 deficit in the seventh to tie the game, Amherst got a run across the board in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 6-5 victory in a Mantle contest on Sunday. 

Charlie May struck out five in six innings work for West County before Marshall Ingram came on to strike out a pair. 

Eathon Bryant had a pair of hits, Cayden Payne had a single and knocked in a pair of runs, Ingram had a hit and an RBI and Wyatt Edes had an RBI in the loss.
