NORTHFIELD – When Marge Anderson lived in Connecticut, it wasn’t uncommon to see residents organizing diorama contests using Peeps marshmallow candies.
Now, the Deerfield Valley Art Association president is bringing a contest to Northfield’s recently renamed Fiddleheads Gallery.
“I thought I’d try it up here,” Anderson said. “I hope people will participate.”
Residents are invited to bring a Peeps diorama to the gallery, located at 105 Main St., on Friday, April 1, or Saturday, April 2, from noon to 5 p.m. The sugary creations will be on display until after Easter.
Prizes will be awarded on Saturday, April 9, at 4 p.m. in four categories: youth (ages 12 and under), teens (ages 13 to 18), adults and family. Additionally, those who visit Fiddleheads Gallery on April 3, 8 or 9 can cast their votes to decide the winner of the Peeples Choice Award. The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to the gallery.
Anderson noted that enjoying the taste of Peeps isn’t a prerequisite to participate.
“I hate Peeps and I’m organizing this!” she exclaimed. “They’re nothing but sugar. There’s no nutritional value.”
Those who are interested in dropping off a Peeps diorama should contact Anderson by email ahead of time at margedvaa@gmail.com.
Also on tap at Fiddleheads Gallery is the artist’s reception for the current agriculture-themed exhibit, “From Fields to Table II.” The reception will be held Sunday, April 3, from 1 to 4 p.m. The exhibit runs through April 24.
Last week, Anderson was excited to put on a teddy bear sleepover, inspired by one that Dickinson Memorial Library organized. Children were able to drop off a teddy bear or other stuffed animal, and gallery staff took photos of them enjoying a picnic, participating in art activities, reading, cooking and more before the children picked up their stuffed companions the following day. Anderson said families would receive a presentation about the stuffed animals’ activities.
Fiddleheads Gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
