A few weeks back I was invited, by letter, to attend Zoom meetings during which a Boston attorney, representing investors from New Jersey, filled me and some neighbors in on the possible growing of marijuana on a field on Country Club Road. This operation would include six buildings erected for the business and plants grown outside.

I had not seen anything in the Recorder about this, so I was surprised. I expect that some departments of the city of Greenfield government were aware of this, to have this Zoom meeting progress as it did. Perhaps the city residents should be informed as this Zoom meeting invitation came to me and a limited amount of neighbors totally out of the blue. I am concerned that there are other areas of the city where this also could happen. Some of the lands that we thought were APR protected from “buildings” are no longer. It has been a sad, hard learning experience for many of us.

Going forward, hopefully the city of Greenfield will be more transparent about the possibilities of growing marijuana crops in bucolic areas of our lovely town. I understand the financial advantages to the farmers. But the more I read and hear about this crop, I am understanding the grave disadvantages to the people who are neighbors to these fields. It is hard to be blindsided, as we were.
