LEYDEN — The town, in partnership with the Franklin Regional Council of Governments (FRCOG) Planning Department, is in the process of developing a combined Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Community Resilience Building and Hazard Mitigation Regional Plan.
Town officials and interested community members are invited to the kick-off meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. to discuss how natural hazards are impacting Leyden and how the town can become more resilient to the impacts of climate change, according to a press release from Allison Gage, land use and natural resources planner with FRCOG. To register, visit bit.ly/LeydenMVP.
The purpose of the MVP Community Resilience Building and Hazard Mitigation Regional Plan, the release states, is to identify natural hazards impacting the town; to inventory the town’s societal, infrastructural and environmental assets and vulnerabilities; to identify the greatest risks of damage by hazards; to discuss relevant policies, programs and regulations that are in place; to identify and prioritize action steps to prevent loss of life and damage to property; and to identify needs and resources for making the community more resilient in the face of climate change.
Once the new plan is approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EOEEA), and has been adopted by the town, Leyden will become a certified MVP community, the release explains. As such, the town will be eligible for state and federal grants to fund projects that address climate resiliency and pre- and post-disaster hazard mitigation.
