SHELBURNE — A 68-year-old Savoy man has died following a Thursday afternoon crash on Route 2 (Mohawk Trail) near Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters.
Robert Labonte was on his trike-style motorcycle heading eastbound on Route 2 when he crashed into the back of a vehicle that had stopped to make a left-hand turn, according to a press release from Laurie Loisel, communication and outreach director with the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
Shelburne Police and Fire departments, American Medical Response (AMR) and Massachusetts State Police troopers responded to the accident at approximately 12:09 p.m., according to Shelburne Fire Chief John Taylor.
“Witnesses said the motorcycle appeared to rear-end a car,” Taylor said Thursday afternoon.
Emergency responders provided aid to Labonte on scene before transporting him to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2 p.m., according to the release.
The driver of the vehicle that was struck in the crash remained on scene and cooperated with investigators, the release states. No citations or criminal charges have been issued.
The crash remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
