Special election to consider debt exclusion for school repairs

BUCKLAND — The town will hold a special election on Tuesday, Aug. 31, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Town Hall to consider a debt exclusion related to two borrowing measures to support repairs at Buckland-Shelburne Elementary School and Mohawk Trail Regional School.

The borrowing measures were first approved at Annual Town Meeting on June 5. According to a Finance Committee memo in advance of the special election, repairs to both schools will focus on parking lots, fire alarm system control panels and the boiler systems. Buckland’s share of the debt is $205,131 for the elementary school work and $151,407 for Mohawk Trail Regional School’s work.

Early in-person voting will also be offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon in the Town Clerk’s Office.

Major construction tasks finished in Shelburne Falls

SHELBURNE FALLS — According to a notice from Linda Overing of Breezeway Farm Consulting, who distributes Bridge Street construction updates on Shelburne’s behalf, A. Martins & Sons Construction has completed all major construction tasks with the exception of:

■A sidewalk panel at the intersection of Water and Bridge streets will be replaced.

■Temporary handrails have been installed on building entrance steps that were replaced or reset during sidewalk construction. Permanent railings, customized for each entrance, will be fabricated. Installation is anticipated in approximately three weeks.

■Final paving layer is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 13. Based on this paving schedule, A. Martins & Sons Construction will return on Oct. 12 to prepare for the final paving. This will include raising some structures.

The company is also responsible for repairing street lights that were damaged during construction. Replacement parts have been ordered.
