MONTAGUE — With a $64,728 Green Communities grant, the town will install energy efficient equipment at the Water Pollution Control Facility, Millers Falls Library and the Second Street parking lot.

This is the fifth Green Communities grant that Montague has received since being designated a Green Community in 2010, amounting to more than $500,000 in all, according to Town Planner Walter Ramsey.

Town Administrator Steve Ellis explained the town will replace oil pumps with an air source heat pump in both the Millers Falls Library and the Water Pollution Control Facility. LED lighting will be installed in each building’s interior, with the Water Pollution Control Facility receiving some LED lighting on its exterior, too. LEDs will also replace traditional streetlights in the Second Street parking lot in Turners Falls.

Ramsey said that since becoming a Green Community, Montague has reduced its energy consumption by 30 percent, eclipsing the 20 percent energy reduction goal set by the Green Communities Act of 2008.
