GREENFIELD — The fire suppression system at the Speedway gas station at 245 Federal St. was inexplicably activated Thursday afternoon, coating the area and cars around it in white powder and closing the gas station.

Both the Greenfield Police and Fire departments responded to the scene. An ambulance also responded to check on a pedestrian who was coated with the powder.

Greenfield Fire Department’s Operations Capt. Alexander Cooley said the chemical agents in the powder are non-toxic, but could still irritate people.

“Any airborne particulate could be an irritant,” he said.

The cause of the system’s activation is undergoing investigation, according to Cooley.
