Lunch, lilacs offered at Senior Center

BERNARDSTON — In celebration of Earth Day on Thursday, the Bernardston Senior Center and LifePath passed out lilac seedlings and vegetable starts with drive-thru lunches on Tuesday.

Nancy Bordewieck passed out the lunches and seedlings. The lilac seedlings were provided by Bernardston Tree Warden Bradley Bordewieck, her son, through the Massachusetts Arborists Association.

Karen Lentner, a nutritionist and dietician with LifePath, grew the zucchini, spinach, lettuce, basil and other vegetable starts from seeds herself. She said she hopes they encourage residents to start their own gardens.

Roughly 200 lilac seedlings were given to Bernardston Elementary School students last week, with 100 more being given to Senior Center members on Tuesday.

Fire departments get over $18K in grant funding

The Northfield and Warwick fire departments have each received grants, totaling over $18,000.

In Warwick, $8,500 will allow for the purchase of new radio equipment that will be in line with a statewide change to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Interoperable Radio System (CoMIRS).
