NORTHFIELD — A group of concerned parents will gather outside the Northfield Town Hall on Thursday, Feb. 4, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in protest of a recent decision by the Pioneer Valley Regional School District School Committee to move sixth-graders from the two district elementary schools to Pioneer Valley Regional School in the fall.
The group of parents has requested that the School Committee delay this move to allow for a thorough planning process and assessment of students’ needs after reduced learning time resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The parent group is also requesting that the School Committee implement further public input processes from families.
Pioneer parents, students and other community members are invited to meet outside Town Hall to raise awareness about the group’s request to the School Committee. Masks and social distancing will be required. For more information, contact Karin Cooley Sanieski at karincooley@hotmail.com.
WARWICK — The Moore’s Pond Beach Committee is once again holding an Ice Out Contest on the pond.
As has been the case in the past few years, “ice out” will be defined by when Duncan, a concrete terrier dressed in a scarf and sunglasses, plunges through the melting ice at the south end of Moore’s Pond. Residents can place guesses on the date and time Duncan will fall through.
“Now that something resembling winter has finally arrived, it’s time to start imagining its passing,” Moore’s Pond Beach Committee member Jim McRae said in an announcement.
McRae said he will print out contest sheets and provide dropboxes for the Warwick Free Public Library and Town Hall, but it would be preferable if interested residents emailed their guesses for the date and time of Duncan’s first swim of the year to jimmcraejim@gmail.com. Entries must be submitted before Feb. 20. There is no entry fee.
WARWICK — The Warwick Free Public Library will host Harold Wolfson, a long-time Warwick resident and the author of “A Town Time Passed By: Warwick, Massachusetts” via Zoom on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m. A few copies of the book are available at the library.
