Visiting Easthampton scored four times in the top of the seventh inning, ending Greenfield’s season with a 5-0 victory in an elimination game of the Western Mass. Summer Baseball League Senior Division tournament on Wednesday night at Vets Field.
Greenfield finished fourth in the tournament, as Easthampton advanced to the final day of competition along with East Longmeadow and Wilbraham Green.
“Now that it’s over and we’re looking back at the season, I’m very pleased to be able to do what we did to get these kids to play some baseball,” Greenfield coach Kyle Phelps said. “After all the disappointment with losing their high school season, some losing their first year of college (due to COVID-19), to get together for six weeks and be able to get on the field and kind of forget everything that was going on, I was very pleased to watch and be a part of it.”
Easthampton led 1-0 thanks to a run in the top of the first inning, and held that advantage until putting things out of reach in the seventh. Isiah Colon struck out eight in a two-hit, complete-game shutout for the visitors.
Connor Waitkus and David Carey had the two hits for Greenfield, which left runners in scoring position in the second, third and fifth innings. Matt Gardner pitched well in defeat, striking out nine in 6⅓ innings while allowing just three hits.
