Visiting Greenfield got off to a strong start, but the bats went cold over the middle innings and the club dropped a 6-3 decision to Wilbraham in the opening round of the double-elimination Western Mass. Summer Baseball League Junior Division tournament on Wednesday night at Spec Pond in Wilbraham.
Greenfield will play at Belchertown tonight at 5:45 p.m. in an elimination game.
“Just didn’t do enough to win the game,” Greenfield skipper Tom Bresciano said. “We had a few mental errors as well that cost us in the end.”
Greenfield stormed out of the gates, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. But Wilbraham pitching settled in, recording strikeouts for seven of the nine outs in the second, third and fourth innings.
Cayden Lehtomaki went 3⅓ innings on the mound for Greenfield, striking out two while allowing four hits, three runs and two walks. David Carey tossed 2⅔ innings with three strikeouts, four walks, three hits and three runs.
The offense finished with four hits, led by Carey’s double and two runs scored. MJ Paulin registered a hit, run and RBI, while Jake Whitney had a hit and an RBI and Alex Gochinski also had a hit.
Northfield Summer Series
Noah de Ruiter traversed the 3.3-mile course in 21 minutes, 20 seconds, capturing the Week 10 title at the virtual Northfield Summer Road Race Series that ran from July 30 through August 5.
Liam Walker was the runner-up in 22:56, followed by Dave Thomas in third place with a time of 23:35. Rounding out the top five finishers were Bob Bezio (23:56) and Lucy Koester (31:10).
Ashfield Community Thursday League
The team of Tony Warchol, Bev LaBelle and Janet Rogers combined to shoot 34, taking top honors in a three-person scramble at the Ashfield Community Golf Club’s Thursday Morning League.
Francie Hall, Terry Norwood and Diane O’Connell were next with a 39, followed by Connie Szelewicki, Cyndie Stetson and Bev Williams with a 40.
K of C League
Kevin Brown, Mark Duncan and Mike Beauregard all posted plus-4 point quotas to lead the way at Wednesday night’s Knights of Columbus League at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.
Art Girard, Ed Sargent and Al Wondoloski all tied for fourth place at plus-3, while skins were won by Rod Herzig, Darren Lenois, Girard and Ron Lenois.
Greenfield Elks League
Keith Schempp and Dave McDonald took first place honors with 49½ points at Wednesday’s Country Club of Greenfield Elks League.
Bob Ferris and Vinnie Melendez were second with 44 points, followed in third place by Mike Larabee and Tom Rogers with 42½ points. Larabee was closest to the pin at 10 feet.
CFC Women’s League
Marty Stinson and Sam Reuss led the way with plus-5 point quotas to pace the field at Wednesday’s Crumpin-Fox Club’s Women’s League.
Michelle Burch and Maggie Haigis were next, tying for third place with plus-4 quotas.
Lisa Sullivan was closest to the pin at No. 3 (4 feet, 4 inches) and Jill Rogalski was closest at No. 9 (8-10½).
