David Kulp’s July 2 letter emphasizes that we should eliminate not just the bad apple, but all of the barrel. There are thousands of barrels of apples (police departments) in this country. To eliminate all would be a disaster. He gives an example of pilots crashing planes.

Has he forgotten how many times pilots have been found to be intoxicated when on duty? We didn’t eliminate all of those airlines pilots because one was bad, we eliminated only the bad one.

We don’t eliminate all restaurants because one is unsanitary, we close that one down.

Extremism isn’t the answer, common sense is.
