Jake Petrin struck out four over five solid innings, limiting Amherst batters to just two hits and a single unearned run as Greenfield Gilmore & Farrell Insurance captured a 4-1 victory in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Sandy Koufax contest on Sunday at Ziomek Field in Amherst.
The win propelled Greenfield to 2-0 on the young season. The club returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts Brattleboro at Vets Field (5:30 p.m.).
Hugh Cyhowski came on to record the save in the victory, tossing a scoreless two final innings.
Petrin also did it at the plate, posting a 2-for-3 night with a pair of stolen bases, while teammate Michael Pierce was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Braeden Tsipenyuk added a hit and an RBI, while Jackson Campbell’s RBI single in the third inning tied the game as Greenfield trailed 1-0 early. Ethan Quinn also had a hit and scored a run, while Devin Dubie scored a run and drove in a run.
The weekend kicked off with a season-opening 10-2 victory over Brattleboro, as Campbell, Tsipenyuk, Jackson Petrin, Brayden Thayer and Jake Petrin combined to strike out 12 batters and allow just three hits on the mound. Tsipenyuk was credited with the win.
Cyhowski had a 2-for-2 outing at the plate, driving in a run and scoring a run, while Pierce was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double. Cam Burnett reached base all four times, smacking a single and driving in two runs to go with three walks. Campbell (1-for-3, RBI, run), Quinn (single, RBI, two runs) and Thayer (hit, run) all contributed in the rout.
Northampton 4, Frontier 3 – Jackson Ayres stole home to lift Northampton past Frontier, 4-3, in Sandy Koufax action at Herlihy Park in Whately on Saturday.
Northampton, which scored two runs in the seventh to come from behind, took a 1-0 lead in the second before Frontier tied the game with a run in the third, then took a 3-1 lead in the fourth.
In the third, Frontier’s Owen Babb singled, stole second and third, and scored on a single by Gabe Solodky.
Aidan Heffernan added a hit for Frontier.
