BERNARDSTON — While the number of positive COVID-19 cases in town is increasing, communication with the state about the virus’ spread is improving, according to Emergency Management Director Peter Shedd.
During a Selectboard meeting Wednesday, Shedd provided an update on the COVID-19 situation in Bernardston. He said there are eight positive cases in town, up from one case as of April 8. Unfortunately, he said, most of these cases involve health care workers.
“It’s the nurses, CNAs (certified nursing assistants) and everyone else that are working in it all along,” Shedd said.
There is a discrepancy, however, with the numbers reported during Wednesday’s meeting and the numbers reported by the Franklin Regional Council of Governments (FRCOG) on Thursday. FRCOG indicates there are six cases in Bernardston, with fewer than five people in quarantine and fewer than five people who have recovered. Statistics from the state Department of Public Health updated on Wednesday match FRCOG’s figures.
Shedd also reported that communication with the Massachusetts Emergency Management Association (MEMA) has improved. He said he has been speaking with MEMA officials three to five times a day, and he is in daily communication with Police Chief James Palmeri.
Meanwhile, personal protective equipment supply chains have improved. Shedd said MEMA has been meeting requests for additional face masks and gear. Local vendors that are supplying the town have also restocked.
“Things are getting a lot better on that side,” he said.
Both the Fire Department and Police Department have instituted procedures that require members to wear a mask, if possible, when responding to commercial or residential buildings.
Town Coordinator Louis Bordeaux noted FRCOG has provided posters encouraging residents to wear masks or other face coverings when entering public buildings. The posters will be placed outside Town Hall and businesses.
