ORANGE — A woman was arraigned Friday after an alleged brutal assault with a rock, fire poker and garden shears.

Rie Hachiyanagi, 48, of South Hadley, was arraigned in Orange District Court on charges related to a Dec. 23 or Dec. 24 incident in Leverett. She has been charged with armed assault with attempt to murder a person over the age of 60.

According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the alleged victim of the attack was seriously injured.

“Police allege that Hachiyanagi assaulted the victim in the victim’s Leverett home, beating the victim with a rock, fire poker and garden shears, leaving the victim, who is expected to survive, with severe injuries,” said Northwestern District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Mary Carey.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Hachiyanagi was charged with three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; mayhem; and armed assault in a dwelling.

Hachiyanagi is being held without bail at the Franklin County House of Correction. Her next hearing will address Hachiyanagi’s dangerousness and will held Feb. 4 in Orange District Court.
