Art show with marquetry furniture coming to Stage on Main

ORANGE — An upcoming art show at Stage on Main, 17 South Main St., will display the marquetry furniture of a longtime Orange resident.

“Peek Into The Drawers of Ralph L. Henley’s Marquetry Furniture,” will open Jan. 9, 2020, from 5 to 7 p.m. A sneak peak of the art show will also open on Dec. 31 for the town’s Starry Starry Night New Year’s Eve celebration.

According to a Stage on Main press release, Henley (1915-2002) practiced making marquetry — a woodworking technique using wood veneers to make designs that are then put on the surface of something, in this case furniture. The furniture was used in his home in Orange, and included drawers showing sailing ships and animals.

In addition to his furniture, several of Henley’s paintings will be displayed, many of which depict Orange. These haven’t been shown since the Orange bicentennial celebration in 2010, when “The Henley Show” exhibited more than 40 of Henley’s paintings of the town, according to the release. Henley’s paintings are scattered throughout the region in public and private collections.

According to organizer Denise Andrews, his furniture has been exhibited locally before, including at the Salmon Falls Gallery in Shelburne Falls, the Arts Council of Franklin County and Haley’s Antiques in Athol.

Admission to the exhibit is free. Donations are gratefully accepted. Light refreshments will be served.
