I was very pleased to see the prominent coverage The Recorder gave the recent HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) graduation at Greenfield Community College. It was the first time I had attended a HiSET graduation and I found it to be very moving. As a young successful traditional student, I mistook academic success for virtue. I have come to understand how wrong I was.

These adult graduates with all sorts of histories and adult responsibilities showed true grit and virtue in pursuit of their education. They deserved the pomp and circumstance of a real commencement and the coverage they received.

The graduation showed that there can be second chances in life and difficulties of the past can be overcome. The Literacy Project and Greenfield Community College are invaluable assets not only to the students who attend but to the greater community as well.
