ATHOL — An Athol man has been arrested and charged with the murder of Kelsey Clifford, whose body was found Nov. 11 at the entrance of that town’s water treatment plant.

Keith Hamel, 23, was arrested in downtown Athol on Monday on a warrant charging him with the murder of Clifford, 26, of Leominster, according to a statement released by the Northwestern District Attorney’s office.

Hamel is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in the Orange District Court sometime after 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Clifford’s death was jointly investigated by the Athol Police Department and Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

A candlelight vigil was held Sunday near Clifford’s former home in Leominster, where about 80 family members and friends gathered to remember the important role she had in their lives.
