SOUTH DEERFIELD — The Union 38 School District will hold early childhood screenings for 3- and 4-year-olds not currently enrolled in the district’s preschool programs on Dec. 3. They will be held by appointment only.
If you have concerns about your child’s development, schedule an appointment by calling Rhoda at the early childhood office at 413-665-1155, ext. 700.
Early childhood screening is aimed at identifying children who may need further evaluation, identifying potential learning concerns and providing parents with helpful resources in speech, hearing, vision, fine motor skills/eye-hand coordination, gross motor skills, counting, reasoning and short-term memory.
Screening is not required for entrance into kindergarten or preschool, and is not part of the process for selecting children for the preschool programs.
Conway appoints Tolland resident as new Highway
Department clerk
CONWAY — The Selectboard voted unanimously this week to appoint Terry Walker as the new Highway Department clerk.
Town Administrator Tom Hutcheson said he hopes Walker will start on Nov. 25.
Walker told the Selectboard she would like to work a couple of days a week, in the late evening. Hutcheson said the job pays $18.45 an hour for eight hours a week.
“(Highway Superintendent) Ron (Sweet) and I met with Terry last week,” Hutcheson told the Selectboard. “(We) are very impressed with her credentials and are feeling very lucky that she feels that she’d like to work for Conway.”
Walker said she lives in Tolland, which borders Connecticut, but that won’t affect her ability to perform her duties.
“The commute doesn’t bother me at all,” she said.
CONWAY — The slab has been poured for a highway shed planned for behind the salt shed just off South Deerfield Road.
Town Administrator Tom Hutcheson said the 10-bay shed will be built on site by Kurtz Inc. of Westfield. He said the Highway Department readied the land for the cement. Hutcheson also said the shed is slated to be 150 feet by 50 feet. It will be used to store Highway Department trucks and equipment.
Hutcheson said the shed should be built before winter.
