CONWAY — A business that started in a Conway garage in 2004 has received accolades from the Massachusetts Legislative Manufacturing Caucus.

Poplar Hill Machine Inc. was recognized for outstanding leadership skills in the manufacturing industry at the caucus’ fourth annual Manufacturing Award Ceremony, held Oct. 22 in the Great Hall of Flags at the State House.

Founder Michael Kurkulonis and his wife, Carol, the company’s vice president, attended the event, which included keynote addresses from Speaker Robert A. DeLeo and Housing and Economic Development Secretary Michael Kennealy. Poplar Hill Machine was nominated for the award by state Rep. Natalie Blais, D-Sunderland.

“It’s … nice to get some recognition as a business in precision machining,” Michael Kurkulonis said. “Our employees are our greatest asset.”

He said he employs 16 people at his 8,500-square-foot facility at 2077 Roaring Brook Road. Poplar Hill Machine manufactures components for the aerospace and microwave industries.

In a statement, Blais said she recently had the opportunity to meet with Michael Kurkulonis and tour Poplar Hill Machine. She said she decided to nominate the company for the award because she was impressed with its commitment to its employees and the local economy.

The Manufacturing Caucus formed in August 2014 and now includes more than 60 legislators from around the state. According to information from Blais, the lawmakers focus on training for manufacturing employees, encouraging innovation by helping start-ups access resources and expanding apprenticeship opportunities in key manufacturing sectors.
