The term “economic development” gets tossed about in every municipal election as a means to broaden our tax base and relieve the residential tax burden. I think we all agree that this is important. However, we must not be short-sighted.
We must ask will what types of development? Who will control this development? Who will this development benefit?
Sheila Gilmour has addressed these important questions both in her presentations and in her literature. The future stability of Greenfield depends on green jobs paying living wages with tax breaks going only to those businesses providing the same. Workers cooperatives have been used as a perfect example of such an enterprise giving stability to our community. Sheila has also addressed the continued development of our downtown as family friendly in order to attract young families into Greenfield. Sheila understands that sustainability is about both our environment and the ability of ourselves and our neighbors to have stable, dignified and productive lives.
Vote for our future. Vote for Sheila Gilmour for mayor on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
