ATHOL — In a game that ended before it was over, the Greenfield High School football team beat Athol High School, 34-0, at O’Brien Field on Friday night.
After a second ambulance visit to the field to attend to an injured player the game was called with 6 minutes, 3 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
“The referees thought because of the two long delays that the kids were cold and we don’t need to get anybody else injured,” Athol coach Bill LaRose said. “I think it was the right call.”
Greenfield had four straight scoring drives to build a 32-0 lead. The Green Wave did not have to punt the entire game.
“Their young kids played hard,” Greenfield coach Mike Kuchieski said. “We had some injuries. We had some kids step in who did some good things.”
When starting running back Bob Provost went down with a knee injury, Shane Kilgour stepped in and carved up the Red Raiders with 19 carries for 139 yards and two touchdowns.
“He did a nice job,” Kuchieski said of Kilgour. “Ran hard. Got north and south.”
Provost aggravated a nagging knee injury, according to Kuchieski.
Kilgour went down with an apparent head injury in the fourth quarter, bringing an ambulance from Athol Hospital for the second time.
The first ambulance came when Robbie Day went down for Athol in the third quarter with a shoulder injury.
“It was precautionary,” LaRose said. “He looked pretty good coming off the field.”
The Red Raiders returned Keegan Lutz, who gives the Red Raiders another option at running back.
Lutz had six carries for 25 yards.
“I thought tonight we ran the ball well and moved it up the field,” LaRose said. “We showed something on offense. We did okay for what we have.”
The Red Raiders had a chance to get some points just before halftime.
A Tim Casavecchia 22-yard pass to Jacob Smith moved the ball to Greenfield’ s 25-yard line.
Greenfield’s Jared Hart snagged an interception to end the threat.
Hart had a productive night running the ball from the fullback position, gaining 116 yards on 16 carries.
Greenfield’ s first drive was a seven-play, 63-yard drive that ended with a Jake Sak 1-yard touchdown on a quarterback keeper up the middle.
Sak completed an 18-yard throw to Mason Meadows on the drive.
Kilgour’s 1-yard touchdown capped a 70-yard drive for the Wave to make the score 16-0.
Greenfield’s third possession was an 11-play, 75-yard drive highlighted by the running of Hart, who had 38 yards on the drive, including a one-yard touchdown.
The halftime score was 24-0.
After halftime, Brody Baird recovered a muffed short kickoff to give Greenfield the ball to open the second half.
Kilgour finished that short drive with a four-yard touchdown.
Greenfield forced a safety in the third quarter to close out the scoring.
Kenny Adams had a sack for the Green Wave defense. Riley Paine forced a fumble for the Red Raiders, which was recovered by Josiah Gauthier.
Sak had completions to Meadows and Trevor Kuchieski for two-point conversions.
Provost and Hart had running conversions.
