Jessica Mihailicenco scored in the 78th minute on a breakaway, giving the Greenfield High School girls soccer team a 4-3 comeback win over Athol High School in an independent contest on Saturday in Athol.
The Green Wave faced a 2-0 halftime deficit but rallied with four goals after intermission.
“We controlled possession in the first half,” Athol coach Tim Cleveland said. “Then we played mostly defense in the second half. Couldn’t get anything going.”
Ally Raymond scored two first-half goals for the Red Raiders (2-6).
Greenfield scored three consecutive goals late in the second half after Athol’s Hannah York went down with a knee injury.
York plays defense for Athol and will be re-evaluated today.
Victoria Marin scored two goals for Greenfield (7-1). Emma Savoy added a goal and three assists for the Wave.
Sage Cronen-Townsend picked up a helper for Greenfield.
Geca Baptista had a goal with an assist for the Red Raiders.
Dina Samake made eight saves for Greenfield, while Haley Wrigley made 11 stops for the Red Raiders.
Balanced scoring leads Red Raiders
Playing a home independent match on Saturday, the Athol boys soccer team shut out Taconic, 4-0.
The offense got going midway through the first half with goals coming from Bryce King (two assists), Maysin Tarbell and Dilan Fountain.
“It took us a little bit,” Athol coach Ruddy Paulino said. “We had opportunities and moved the ball well it just took us a while to find the back of the net.”
Logan Kirwan buried a penalty kick in the second half for the Red Raiders.
The defense, led by Mark Ferrari, stood firm throughout.
“Overall it was clean,” Paulino said. “We took care of business in the back.”
Casey Mason notched the shutout, making eight saves.
PVCA spikes Athol
The Athol volleyball team lost at home, 3-1, on Saturday to Pioneer Valley Christian Academy in independent play.
The Red Raiders jumped ahead of the Eagles but could not hold off the comeback at Mallet Gymnasium.
Set scores were 11-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-23.
Setter Lexi Forte had a strong match for Athol with four aces and 12 assists.
Lexi Carrasquillo led the Red Raiders with eight kills.
Lundgren scores but Red Raiders fall
In a Tri-County league contest, the Athol field hockey team lost to Amherst Regional, 4-1, at home on Saturday.
The Hurricanes had a 1-0 halftime lead before pulling away in the second half.
Megan Lundgren scored for the Red Raiders, with an assist from Sadey Lehtomaki.
Sam Kenniff made 10 saves for Athol.
