Avery Tuttle, Connor Waitkus and Tenzin Tsundue all scored goals as Frontier Regional School snapped a four-game losing streak defeating Pioneer Valley Regional School 3-0 in an independent boys’ soccer match Friday afternoon in South Deerfield.
It was a much needed victory after the Red Hawks (2-4-1) opened the season playing mostly Division 1 competition.
“I was proud of the way the kids played today,” said Red Hawks head coach Evan Horton. “We’ve had a bit of an odd week with only one practice but I thought we controlled the tempo for most of the game today and played well on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. I give Pioneer a lot of credit they are very well coached and very athletic so I was pleased with the overall result as we head into a tough stretch of games starting next week.”
Tanner Finch and Cairn Bright each had assists for the Red Hawks in support of goalkeeper Nick Jarvis who stopped one shot in net. Ryan Potter played well in goal for the Panthers turning away seven shots in the loss.
The Red Hawks return to action Monday night when they travel to face Hampshire Regional School. Frontier fell to Hampshire 1-0 last year in South Deerfield and will be looking to avenge the loss when the two teams take the field at 7:00 in Westhampton.
“Hampshire is always a tough team to play as they always have a talented group of players,” said Horton. “They beat us last year on our field so we know it will be a hard fought game but we are looking forward to the challenge.”
Westfield Tech 2, Greenfield 0 — Adam Strycharz scored a goal and added an assist as Westfield Technical Academy improved to 8-0 with a 2-0 victory over Greenfield in an independent boys’ soccer match Friday in Greenfield.
Alex Carballo turned away 14 shots in net for Greenfield in the loss.
The Green Wave plays again on Monday when they travel to Springfield to face Sabis International Charter School.

The Thunder return to the court Monday night at home against East Longmeadow.
Greenfield 2, Northampton 1 — Katie Haselton scored two goals including the decisive second half goal as Greenfield squeaked out a 2-1 win over Northampton in an independent match Friday in Northampton.
While the Green Wave earned a win, Greenfield missed on multiple scoring chances (17 shots), and a lack of communication almost cost Greenfield a point.
“We came out flat today and didn’t communicate well with each other,” Greenfield coach Erin Thayer said. “I was happy that we were able to find a way to win, but it wasn’t our best game. We will take the victory, but we have to focus more on our communication and keep on improving as the season moves along.”
Racquel Provost added an assist for Greenfield in support of winning goalkeeper Ainslee Flynn, who stopped one shot.
