Olivia Deane had 19 kills and Jaden Sullivan added 10 kills, but it wasn’t enough as Frontier dropped three closely contested sets to Westborough in an eventual 3-1 loss in an independent match played at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield on Friday night.
Westborough took the first set, 25-23, but the Red Hawks fought back to win the second set, 25-16.
Both the third and fourth sets went extra points, with the Rangers taking both, 27-25 and 26-24.
“Great match between two teams that are still trying to find their identities,” Frontier coach Sean MacDonald said. “It was a two hour match and it only went four sets. We had our chances but couldn’t close out the sets at the end.”
Reilly Isler had 19 digs in the loss, while Deane and Sullivan each had 16 digs. Charlotte Doulette had seven kills and Olivia Rosewarne did a great job distributing the ball, finishing with 35 assists.
Athol falls to the Eagles
Easthampton 3, Athol 0 — Lexi Forte had four aces, five assists and two kills for the Red Raiders, but it wasn’t enought to earn the win as Athol fell 25-15, 25-10, 25-23 in an independent match in Athol.
Alexis Carrasquillo added six kills, two digs and one ace in the loss.
Ware 3, FC Tech 0 — Lillian Poirier blasted six aces to go along with two digs for Franklin County Technical School but the Eagles fell to Ware High School 25-22, 25-10, 25-22 in an independent girls’ volleyball match Friday in Turners Falls.
Faith Smith registered an ace and three digs for Franklin Tech and teammate Renee Reed tallied two aces, two digs and a block in the loss. The Eagles return to action Monday when they travel to face Smith Vocational.
South Hadley 3, Greenfield 0 — South Hadley swept through the Green Wave, winning 25-16, 25-15 and 25-9 in an independent match played at Greenfield High School.
For Greenfield, Hannah Mailloux had five kills, two aces and two digs in the loss with Denisse Montijo added three aces, two kills, eight assists and three digs.
Sabis 3, Mahar 0 — Madison Harrington recorded three kills and five assists for Mahar Regional School but the Senators fell in straight sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-13 to Sabis International Charter School in an independent girls’ volleyball match Friday in Springfield.
Hailee Meeker registered three kills in the loss and teammate Deanna Smith added five digs. The Senators fell to .500 on the season at 4-4 and will return to action on Monday when they travel to face Turners Falls High School.
Chicopee 3, Mohawk 0 — Octavia Crawford registered two kills, two assists and an ace for Mohawk Trail Regional High School but the Warriors fell to Chicopee High School 25-6, 25-13, 25-14 in an independent match Friday night in Buckland.
Alex Lilly played well for Mohawk adding six digs in the loss.
King scores twice in draw
Bryce King scored two goals for Athol but Gateway scored a late second-half goal as the two teams battled to a 2-2 draw in a Schmid Division boys’ soccer match Friday night in Huntington.
King scored both goals in the first half, the first coming off a cross from Connor Mahony and the second goal on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box. Nick Herman and Joe Sakowski each tallied goals for Gateway including the late goal that slipped under the hands of Athol goalkeeper Casey Mason as each teams earned a point for the tie. Mason finished with 12 saves for the Red Raiders and the teams effort drew praise from coach Ruddy Paulino.
“The kids played hard on both sides tonight,” said Paulino. “We are playing through injuries right now and are missing a few players so I was really proud of the way the kids played. Gateway was tough and they were hungry for that last goal but we hung in there and I was happy with our effort.”
Mahar 2, Sci-Tech 0 — Riley Drew scored two second half goals as Mahar rolled to a 2-0 victory over Sci-Tech in a McGrath Division match in Springfield.
“We had some really good scoring opportunities in the first 40 minutes but we couldn’t breakthrough,” said Mahar coach Dan Guertin. “Then in the second half we changed our formation to a more of an attacking style and we were able to score within the first 10 minutes before dropping back on defense to finish the game.”
Logan Dodge played well in net for Mahar recording nine saves while both Cam Johnson and James Temple registered an assist.
Pathfinder 1, FC Tech 1 — Tony Barilone scored a goal in the 77th minute to help Franklin County Technical School secure a 1-1 draw with Pathfinder in a Tri-County League match.
Barilone notched the equalizer after Tech intercepted a pass at midfield, passed the ball ahead into the penalty area and Eagles forward Sam Lashtur directed a pass over to Barilone who tapped the ball into the back of the net for the goal.
“We had a lot of scoring chances today,” said Tech head coach Kurt Richardson, “We had trouble putting the ball on goal and their goalie played well, we just couldn’t finish our scoring chances and we were lucky to earn a tie.”
Matt Reigner recorded eight saves for the Eagles.
Hoosac 2, Mohawk 2 — Jaime Colemenjaro and Tyler Dubreuil each scored a goal as Mohawk Trail Regional High School battled to a 2-2 draw with Hoosac Valley High School in an independent boys’ soccer match Friday afternoon in Buckland.
Colemenjaro opened up the scoring for Mohawk on a free kick in the 8th minute but Hoosac came right back to tie the score at 1-1 right before the half on a goal from Evan Norcross. Norcross then added his second score of the contest in the 57th minute, giving Hoosac the 2-1 lead but it was Dubreuil who scored in the 64th minute to secure the 2-2 draw.
Reuben Bassett played well in net for Mohawk turning away 16 shots.
Smith Academy 3, Greenfield 0 — Alex Carballo, Miles Ferreira and Crescens Iavorschi combined to stop 14 shots in net for Greenfield but the Green Wave fell to Smith Academy 3-0 in a McGrath Division boys’ soccer match Friday in Hatfield.
Nate Moynihan scored twice for Smith Academy and added an assist in the victory.
Four Rivers 4, Eagle Hill 1 — Avani Richardson netted two goals as Four Rivers Charter School cruised to a 4-1 win over the Eagle Hill School in a boys’ River Valley Athletic League soccer match at Greenfield Community College.
Evan Leaf added a score for the Otters and Eagle Hill committed an own goal in the loss.
Warriors enter win column
Avery Dupree, Courtney Allen and Abby Sinistore all recorded a goal as Mohawk Trail earned its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Franklin Techn in an independent field hockey match.
Dupree opened up the scoring for Mohawk and the score remained that way into the second half before Allen and Sinistore helped Mohawk pull away. Jenny Currier scored the lone goal for the Eagles in support of goalkeeper Kyleigh Baleno who stopped 15 shots in net. Kordaryl Kendall stopped three shots for Mohawk in the victory.
Dublin Academy 2, Four Rivers 0 — Eliza Ryan and Luna Hews each scored a goal as Dublin Academy defeated Four Rivers Charter School 2-0 in a River Valley Athletic League girls’ soccer match Friday afternoon.
Eleanor Herbert played excellent defense for Four Rivers in her first career varsity game at the position. The Otters return to action Friday at home against the Stoneleigh-Burnham School.
Wave drop close match
Mason Dumas fired a 1-over par, 37 to help Monson High School squeak out a 12½ – 11½ win over Greenfield High School in a Bi-County East golf match Friday afternoon at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Dumas edged out Ryan Cote at the No. 1 position recording eight pars to go along with a bogey. Cote played well for the Green Wave carding a 3-over par, 39 and played the last six holes at even par to earn a point. Gabe Laroche carded a 42 at the No. 2 position for Greenfield and earned three points while teammate Hunter Roberts took four points at the No. 5 spot.
Easthampton 16½, Turners Falls 7½ — Tyler Colby eagled the par-5, 3rd hole and earned medalist honors leading Easthampton High School to a 16½ – 7½ win over Turners Falls High School in a Bi-County League golf match Friday at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.
Brian Poirier led the way for Turners Falls taking three points at the No. 2 position and Joe Kochan earned the two points with a tie at No. 6.
Hampshire 22½, Mohawk 1½ — Levi Zielinski carded a 46 and earned match medalist honors as Hampshire Regional High School rolled to a 22½ – 1½ win over Mohawk in an independent golf match at Beaver Brook Golf Course in Williamsburg.
Leading the way for Mohawk was Phineas Tuttman who took a point out of the No. 5 spot. Ben Thompson grabbed half a point playing at the No. 1 position.
