NORTHAMPTON — A 19-year-old Greenfield resident was hospitalized with serious injuries Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 91 in Northampton.
According to Massachusetts State Police, a 19-year-old from Hartford, Conn., driving a 2004 Ford Focus, struck the guardrail near Exit 18 at 9:35 p.m., causing him to crash in the median.
Looking to assist the driver who had crashed, a 52-year-old man and a 19-year-old passenger, both of Greenfield, stopped in a 2011 Acura MDX on the left shoulder of the highway. When they exited the car, the 19-year-old was struck by a 35-year-old Agawam woman driving a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.
The driver of the Ford Focus was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital with minor injuries while the 19-year-old passenger who was struck by the Chevy Malibu was taken to Baystate Medical Center with serious injuries. The two other drivers were uninjured.
Police have not released information related to the causes of the crashes or the identities of the people involved. No charges have been filed.
The crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and Crime Scene Services Section.
