COLRAIN — After three residents allegedly incurred damage to their tires while driving along the newly repaired East Colrain Road, the street has been temporarily closed to vehicles.
The damage was caused by faulty road infill provided by the contractor, Northeast Paving, according to Town Coordinator Kevin Fox. He said the infill was laced with metal objects.
“They’ve acknowledged that it did not meet the specifications” of the bid, Fox said.
While there is a detour, residents living on the 2.5-mile street that connects Shelburne Lane and Van Nuys roads need to use East Colrain Road to leave their homes, he said.
At a meeting on Thursday night with the Selectboard and Northeast Paving, roughly 20 residents attended to ask questions and air concerns about the road closure.
“There’s justifiable concern that they’re going to get a flat tire,” Fox said. “It’s just, unfortunately, we can’t fix it overnight.”
Representatives from Northeast Paving have said they will rectify the situation by repairing the road properly and reimbursing residents whose vehicles incurred damage. However, they have not yet said how they will do so, Fox said.
A meeting with the Selectboard and Northeast Paving is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Town Hall to continue the discussion.
