Ben Zaranek tossed a complete game, striking out four in Frontier Alber Hearing Service’s 5-1 win over Northampton in a PVYBL Mickey Mantle playoff game, Thursday, at Valiton Field in South Deerfield.
Kyle Barnes had a hit and two RBIs, Tynan Creagh hit a double, Zaranek had a hit and an RBI and Ben Martino singled in the win.
For Northampton, Seth Finnessy singled, Eddie Sarafin hit a triple, Owen Shelffo hit a double and an RBI, Max Callan hit two singles and Luke Gaida hit safely.
Frontier will play Amherst at 5:30 tonight in another playoff game at Headmaster’s Field in Deerfield.
F.C. Babe Ruth
A pair of four-run innings were the difference as Parody Builders defeated Smitty’s Pub, 8-1, on Thursday night to advance to the Franklin County Babe Ruth League championship game.
Parody will play Turners Falls Athletic Club on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the title.
Parody scored four runs in the second and added four more in the fourth inning.
James Carmichael led the way for Parody at the plate with three hits. Casey Christi and TJ Thibeault each added a hit and Ben Dodge had a hit that brought in a pair of runs.
Jake Whitney, Aidan Heffernan, Joey White and Jackson Harper all hit safely for Smitty’s.
Smitty’s lone run came in the first inning, when Harper stole home.
Thibeault pitched five innings for Parody, striking out 11. Christi pitched the final two innings, striking out two and allowing just one hit.
Ian Simpson pitched an inning and two thirds for Smitty’s, striking out two. Whitney pitched the rest of the way, striking out eight and walking just one batter.
12u Suburban League
With the game knotted 4-4 heading into the final inning, the Greenfield Grizzlies were able to rally and score the game-winning run, topping the Agawam Inferno, 5-4, Thursday, in Suburban League 12U action.
Anna Bucala hit a double for the Grizzlies, while Mackenzie Paulin, Kelly Baird and Addison Rotkiewicz each had a single and RBI.
Kylee Gamache hit safely and Margarette Howland brought in a run to score.
Paulin pitched all seven innings for Greenfield, allowing three hits and striking out 14 Inferno batters.
• Elsewehere, Frontier Red needed just five innings to take care of the Agawam Sharks, winning 20-8 at Agawam High School, Thursday.
Mel Ring pitched all five innings for Frontier, allowing three hits and striking out five.
Ashley Taylor and Claire Kirkendall each had a single and double for Frontier while Maggie Potter, Ariana Miller and Olivia Machon all had a pair of hits.
Delanie Fifield had a double and Margaret Edwards, Lani Bailey and Ring all hit safely in the win.
14u Suburban League
Brielle Widelo struck out 15 batters in seven innings, lifting the Greenfield Grizzlies to a 14-2 win over Turners Falls in a 14U Suburban League game Thursday night at the Bourdeau Fields Complex in Turners.
Greenfield’s Maria Konieczny had three hits, including two doubles and two RBIs, while Rachel Dodge smacked three singles in the win.
Turners’ Madison Liimatainen struck out eight in a complete-game effort in the circle. Cordelia Guerin and Sophia Pinardi paced the offensive attack with two hits apiece.
PVWSL
Teagan Valeski and Amanda Chapin each hit triples in Shelburne’s 12-5 win over Goshen at Tilton Field, Thursday, in a Pioneer Valley Women’s Softball League game.
Valeski had a pair of RBIs and Chapin brought a run home in the win.
For Goshen, Ashley Tomkins and Whitney Roberts both hit triples, with Roberts bringing in a run.
• Elsewhere, Taylor Boutwell had three hits, one a home run, and two RBIs to lead Ashfield past Buckland Brew Crew, 14-8.
Amanda Clarke had three hits in the win and Nikki Pullen added two hits and brought in three RBIs.
For Buckland, Kim Sweet had a home run and three RBIs and Amber Crosier had a trio of hits.
• Conway topped the Buckland Rangers, 20-4, in five innings, Thursday.
Megan West had the hot bat for Conway, going 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Kristin Oullette had a triple, double and single and brought in four RBIs.
Shayla Demers had a two RBI triple and Carrie LeDoyt had two hits and an RBI for Buckland in the loss.
Greenfield Co-Rec
Hubies Tavern slipped past Concord Optical, 8-7, in a Greenfield Co-Rec game at Green River Field, Thursday.
Jereck Smith hit a home run, double and brought in a pair of runs and Brian Ginnity also homered in the win. Nick Aldrich added three hits, one a triple, for Hubie’s and Kelly Moulton had a pair of hits.
Jay Avery was 4-for-4 with two doubles and a trio of RBIs for Concord Optical and Steph Wilkes had three hits.
New England Am
South Deerfield’s Jacob Zaranek continued his outstanding summer on the links, as he finished in a tie for fifth place Thursday with a four-round total of 4-under par 284 at the 90th New England Amateur Championship at The Quechee Club in Vermont.
Zaranek, a rising junior at Fairfield University, carded Thursday rounds of 70 and 71 to finish off the three-day event in style.
Xavier Marcoux won the title, finishing 9-under 279 to best the field by one stroke.
Conway’s Nathan Patterson also capped a stellar tournament with a strong finish on Thursday. The Franklin Pierce product fired rounds of 73 and 73 on the final day of the event to nab a tie for 25th place at 6-over 294.
Ashfield Golf Club
Bob Jilson and Norma Labelle tied with Tony Warhol and Connie Szelewicki in a two person scramble at the Ashfield Golf Club, Thursday, with each pair shooting a 38.
Cyndie Sterson and Diane O’Connell took second with a score of 39.
Northfield Golf Course
Cody Snow and Scott Powers finished with the best low gross score, 34, in the Timmons League at the Northfield Golf Course, Thursday.
Mike Stephens and Don Churchill took second with a low gross score of 35. Brian Deane and Bob Bateman finished with the first low net after a match of cards with a 26. Matt Deane and Ed Gillespie finished second.
Mike Stephens won closest to the pin on No. 6 and Neil Black won it on No. 7. Snow and Brian Cocco were match medalists with a 36, as well as Kyle Matteson and Nick Griswold with 37.
CFC
Jason Germain and Dan Beniot tied for first place with individual quotas of plus-4 in the Blue Tee group in the men’s league at the Crumpin-Fox Club, Thursday.
Erik Barnes, Chris Stoddard, Mark Kimball and Jason Wallace all tied for third with scores of plus-2. Mark Waskiewicz won skins on holes one and nine with birdies, Germain won a skin with a birdie on hole two and Barnes won a skin with a birdie on hole three. Waskiewicz won closest to the pin on hole nine and Erik Barnes won the same contest on hole three.
In the Gold Tee group, Chester Kugler took first with a score of plus-4. Dave Puchalski and Gene Kugler tied for second with scores of plus-2.
Puchalski was closest to the pin on hole three with a shot landing eight feet, eight inches away.
Monty Tech Summer League
The Athol boys summer league basketball could not overcome turnovers in a 60-28 loss to Oakmont on Thursday in Fitchburg.
Nick Bousquet led the Red Raiders with eight points. Mark Ferrari added six points with eight rebounds.
Athol played Oakmont close before some turnovers gave the Spartans a 26-15 halftime lead.
Riley Paine chipped in with seven points with Noah Pottinger scoring four points with five rebounds.
Conall Tontodonato came off the bench with two points and four rebounds.
Keene Summer League
Micalyn Mailloux’s 18 points paced the Mahar girls summer league team in a 44-22 win over Pioneer Valley Regional in Keene, N.H. on Thursday.
Courtney Page closed in on a double-double for Mahar with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Haylee Allen worked the glass for 11 rebounds for Mahar (6-4).
Paige Loughman filled the stat sheet for the Panthers with 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals.
• The Mahar girls junior varsity team closed out its season with a 22-12 win over Keene High School on Thursday.
Kendrah Doane scored 11 points while Emma Bacigalupo added eight for the Senators (7-3).
DRIVE League
Tom Vinagre scored 15 points to lead Belchertown past Hampshire, 43-39, in a boys JV game at Greenfield High School, Wednesday.
John Boudreau led Hampshire with 17 points.
• Pat Boyden scored 23 points and Erich Brown chipped in 15 points in Frontier’s 71-43 victory over Orange.
Connor Sluter scored 19 points in the loss.
• South Hadley defeated Greenfield, 54-48, behind 14 points from both Kyle Harris and Ed Wykowski.
Mav Ward led Greenfield with 19 points and Dante Ruggiano added 11 points of his own.
In boys middle school action at Pioneer, Wednesday, Greenfield topped Frontier, 38-35.
Hugh Cyhowski scored 14 points and Jacob Blanchard had 10 points for Greenfield, while Hugh Hard led Frontier with 12 points.
• The Raptors defeated Hampshire, 51-22, behind 18 points from Carson Brown and 14 points from Brayden Thayer.
Tom Connors was Hampshire’s top scorer with eight points.
In boys 5th and 6th grade games at Pioneer, Wednesday, Teddy Cyr’s 10 points led Frontier past Bernardston, 50-21.
Kainan Stevens and Jackson Cogswell each scored six points in the loss.
• Isiah Ortiz scored 11 points in Greenfield’s 27-24 defeat of Hinsdale.
Connor Dixon scored five points for Hinsdale.
Beacon Clay Classic
Brian Lamore topped Matt Howell, 6-0, 6-1, Thursday at the West County Cider Beacon Clay Court Classic in Greenfield.
Steve Pedigree survived a second-set scare from Terry Plotkin to come away with a 6-0, 6-4 victory.
Tim Prevost’s 6-1, 6-3 win over Kyle Maroni advanced him to the tournament finals, which will tentatively take place Saturday.
Lamore and Pedigree will square off in the semifinals tonight at 5:30.
Bob Bezio took first in Race No. 5 of the Northfield Summer Road Race, Thursday, with a time of 22:48.
Isaac Bingham (23:40) took second and Dave Thomas (23:44) finished in third.
Noah DeRuiter (25:29), Neal Gifford (25:36), Glenn Hammett (25:44), Alex Loud (27:10), Nicole Duprey (27:18), Paul Marguet (28:35) and Jamie Wells (30:40) rounded out the top 10.
