EAST LONGMEADOW — Authorities have released the name of a stabbing victim in East Longmeadow.
The Hampden district attorney’s office says the victim of the stabbing in a home on Somers Road, which is Route 83, on Tuesday afternoon was 61-year-old Tina Jette.
Matthew Scavotto is charged with murder in the case. The 35-year-old man was held without bail after pleading not guilty Wednesday in Palmer District Court. His attorney did not argue for bail.
Authorities have not disclosed the relationship between the suspect and victim, but both were residents of the home.
The stabbing remains under investigation.
LINCOLN, N.H. — Authorities in New Hampshire are looking for a 70-year-old hiker in the White Mountain National Forest who had called his wife several days ago to say he was just about out of water.
Authorities said the Massachusetts man set out on a 30-mile trek Sunday night on the Pemigewasset Loop Trail in Lincoln. He called his wife Monday about his water situation and said he would be a few hours later than expected.
Eighteen different teams, including the Air National Guard, have been searching for the man. Radio and cellphone coverage is not good in the wilderness area. The search was expected to resume Thursday.
BOSTON — A man charged with killing his ex-girlfriend and her sister in their Boston apartment in 2011 has been sentenced to life in prison.
Jean Weevins Janvier was sentenced Thursday a day after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and second-degree murder in the November 2011 fatal shootings of 21-year-old Stephanie Emile and 23-year-old Judith Emile.
Janvier, when given a chance to address the court, denied killing the two women.
Prosecutors say Janvier had a brief relationship with Stephanie Emile and was angry when the relationship ended.
