Mohawk Trail Regional High School graduate Meghan Davis finished 31st in the 5,000-meter run at the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. on Friday night. Davis’ race time (17:53.35) was her second-best time ever.

“It went well, I did pretty much everything I wanted to do,” Davis said. “I started a little back but I worked my way back up.”

The Outdoor Nationals were running a bit behind schedule on the campus of North Carolina A&T University.

“They are always behind schedule,” Davis said. “A lot of the heats take a lot of time. But I would rather be behind schedule than ahead to plan my warm up.”

The delay did not affect Davis on the track.

“It was definitely stressful at the beginning,” Davis said. “A little frantic but it ended up working out.”

Before attending Tufts University in the fall, Davis plans on running the Independence Day 5K in Pittsfield before the Bridge of Flowers 10K Classic in Shelburne Falls on Aug. 10. Conditioning work from Tufts will take up most of her summer.

“I will give my body some time off from racing,” Davis said. “Endurance-based stuff instead of speed stuff. Building up mileage before the season starts.”

Sydney Masciarelli won the 5K championship, crossing the finish line at 16 minutes, 16 seconds. Runner-up Kelsey Chmiel (16:16.20) was right behind Masciarelli. Amherst Regional’s Sophia Jacobs-Townsley placed seventh (17:08.22) while Emily Boutin of Pope Francis High School finished 28th (17:51).
